Who Am I?

Who Am I?
In the time since I’ve begun pursuing my career as a graphic designer, illustrator, and all-round artist, I’ve realized two things: I love to draw, and I’m pretty good at it. Since going down this path, I’ve stumbled and admittedly lost my way many times, but after much recuperation, and cultivation of self-esteem through artistic expression. I’m back to doing what I do best: creating art.
Currently, I’m completing my Associates degree of Applied Science in Digital Animation and 3D Design, searching for work all the while as I aim for my dream of being an illustrator—ideally, a comic book artist. Something that I will keep in my Capstone is this appreciation and passion for comics, graphic novels, and cartoons. Although I really enjoy these things, I never realized how much I enjoyed it until I really delved into the art community, where my first foray into it was through a discord channel disconcertingly called ‘Sam’s Art Babies’. I was amazed at how many people, from all walks of life, enjoyed the same things that I did. I found people there that not only shared my passions but saw what I created from them and really enjoyed my expressions—enough to call me a friend. The way I go about expressing myself as a creative person is by reflecting on feelings I have in response to different stimuli through drawing and other mediums, to achieve a sort of gratifying therapeutic effect; this usually manifests as expressions that are absurd or exaggerated, with a tinge of edgy linework. What I achieve through this expression is an impact on the person that looks at or observes what I’ve done, in such a way that they are searching for more: such a response makes me feel proud of my work as there’s an implied interest towards what I’ve done.
Where I find a lot of my success—and subsequent passion—arises is from my dry-medium drawing and digital drawings. This mostly occurs when my creative flames are fanned with the aid of music, and/or the art that I find in comics, books, and animation where I draw upon many inspirations. When creating, I have the punk, metal, and rock bands that make up the unofficial soundtrack for the life I’ve lived, and for the people I’ve shared it with, as the works of Frank Frazetta, Marc Brunet, and the works of the renaissance are reflected in my work. As I achieve what I’m currently setting out to do, my next goal is to be an artist that can afford to live on their own as I pursue making my own comics. To that end, I’m drawing and brushing up on skills that I will implement in the future.
